WatchWatch
asws: Shot this a few years back of a zoetrope at Disneyland. Pretty amazing example of how animation works. What might not be obvious is the pulsing strobe light which helps the eye sync with the sculpture, creating an animated effect. Once the strobes turn off, the image returns to a blurred mess. Such a wonderful object.

Vintage Södahl Christmas Cards
There is a small thrift store in my neighborhood that has very odd hours. So I was excited to drive by the other day and see them open.  I’m always on the hunt for interesting finds. Inside they had a large selection of holiday cards for sale.  Great! I can do my Christmas card shopping and use paper goods that would have ended up in the landfill. I was able to find a bunch of cards with...

Review: Minolta SRT 101
asws: Demand Respect Predecessor to the X-700, the Minolta SRT 101 is the prototype model of the modern camera. There is no mind blowing technology here, just the basic features of a mid-century camera. But what it lacks in skills, it makes up with charm. This camera is instant Peter Parker (or Jimmy Olsen). With this camera you will gain access to every private party in town, people will...

Simpleweeble Wordle
Cool site I found that will generate word clouds.  You can either type in your blog, blog feed or any other web page.  You can also manually enter a bunch of text and it will formulate a cloud.  Really cool.  Click on the image to go to the site or check them out at http://www.wordle.net/

Paper Back Wreath
NOTE:  No innocent books was harmed in the making of this wreath. I was in the mood to create a wreath for the library I volunteer at and was limited in resources to do so. There were some damaged paper back books that were about to be tossed in the trash. Don’t use books that are still in good condition, look for ones that the pages are falling out of the binding. I had seen a wreath once...

Amigurumi
My mom is a master crocheter/knitter/seamstress.  I think it’s in the genes since her father was a master tailor in Germany prior to the war So when it came time for me to learn, I was a typical teenager.  I didn’t keep up with it. I’m a wizard of single crochet and double crochet if I’m making a blanket.  But try a round or some type of apparel piece….forget it. ...

School for Adults-Kaizen
I received an article about Personal Kaizen:  15 Tips to continuous improvement. After reading it, I was left with complete inspiration and motivation.  I felt 18 years old again and the world was at my feet.  Kaizen is the japanese philosophy of continuous improvement.  In America we tend to lean towards “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”  Successful japanese companies...

Mid-Century Owl (unknown)
I’ve been seeing this owl sculpture everywhere.  Design magazines, vintage books, blogs, one of my fav design books:  Bohemian Modern: Living in Silver Lake. My recent spotting was at Barney’s COOP in NYC.  It was a prop above a current collection of 3.1 Philip Lim.  I’ve been trying to find out the sculptor as well as scouring eBay for one.  Does anyone have some info?

Farewell Summer, Hello Fall...kind of....
Someone told me that September 22 is the official beginning of the autumnal equinox. We are officially in Fall,  although living in Hawai’i is kind of like summer every day. Okay, I just think this photo is funny.  My beach lip balm is about the same size as my apple banana.  It’s my tribute pix to summer.

UpCycled Handbags at ReFind Originals
I am a handbag fiend and can’t get enough.  I’ve stated before that it’s a problem.  A few years ago I gave up leather handbags.  Let me clarify…I still buy them if it’s from a vintage or thrift store.   My reason is two-fold.  First, ecologically, the amount of energy and waste it produces to make leather goods is amazing.  Secondly, our society is so disposable....

Mid-Century Airport Building
I pass this building whenever I need to ship something via Aloha Air Cargo.  I finally decided to stop by and take a closer look and snap a few photos. I love the muted color palette and 3 dimensional pieces.   The backside of the building is pretty cool too.  Love the wavy roofline. I really wish that buildings would have art incorporated into the facade.  It makes me slow down and...

Mobile Art
Since getting my bike, I’ve been all over the place.  It really gives you a different perspective on the city.  I also had a chance to snap some photos of these. Mini wire sculptures have been seen floating around Honolulu. First discovered them while stuck in traffic on Nimitz Highway. I loved that it took my mind off the frustration of being stuck in my car. I’ve been on the look...

I’ve been noticing more and more people around me using bikes as a main mode of transportation.  I admit that I aspire to do that but I’m a scaredy-cat bike rider.  After watching the trailer of ‘Crude’, it inspired me to make some changes. I’d like to give up anything that runs on petroleum.  Can’t do that yet, but I can start by biking (that’s my new...
